MAiD

Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD)

MAiD is a medical procedure that is now legal across Canada for qualifying adults. There are strict regulations and guidelines specific to each province and each health authority.

I have counselled and journeyed with clients who considered Medical Assistance in Dying. Some did not choose to have the procedure, while others did ultimately choose to have MAiD. Research and anecdotal evidence shows that, given the opportunity for quality palliative care and a safe place to explore end-of-life goals, the vast majority of clients do not choose the procedure. For those who do, the experience is peaceful and positive for them, as well as their family and friends.

As a palliative counsellor of many years, I offer that safe place to individuals and their support networks to explore thoughts, feelings, and emotions around MAiD. I can accompany individuals and their support networks through the journey of MAiD exploration and completion of the procedure. I support friends and family through their grief before, during, and after the procedure.

As a consultant, I can educate clients on the processes of palliative care and, if requested, MAiD.

As a professional, I am legally mandated and ethically bound to never suggest MAiD as a health care option. However, I am experienced and knowledgeable to provide comprehensive support once the procedure or information about it is requested.
